I had really high expectations from this bag and from Crumpler. I still use a Crumpler Messenger bag purchased 3 years ago (from Aus.) and it’s still as good as new.
Never thought twice before spending US $190 on this bag. Money was no issue and as I was very confident about the Crumpler design, quality and style. I couldn’t locate a Crumpler store here in the Middle East so I decided to get it on Amazon. But it has turned out to be a major disappointment.
Within the first 5 mins of use, the black nylon strap separated from the padded part of the left shoulder strap. The stitching came off. The bag was nearly empty (just my Pentax SLR) and I had used it for approx 5 mins (1 min before getting into the car, and 4 mins after getting out and riding an elevator). The strap just failed (embarassing public moment). At first I refused to accept it, refused to believe. I thought it was just some buckle strap that must’ve come undone and could be put back easily. Slowly realisation dawned, the stitching had come off. No way I could repair it without some heavy duty sewing equipment. What was even more shocking was the other strap looked like it would come of easily (frayed stiches). Apalling! I would never in my dreams expect this even from a $10 bag. No Way.
Since I had this mailed to me overseas (shipped to my NY address and then spent a lot of money having it forwarded overseas to the middle east where I work). I cannot send it back without spending a lot of money. I could buy another bag for that amount. And that’s exactly what I did. Just ordered a KATA DR-467 for $66.
I still can’t figure out how Crumpler who sell products for about 400% the price of their competition could let a defective product slip through. All in all, I’m very disappointed.
BTW, this is a beautifully designed but poorly engineered product. Also, be warned that the bag itslef is huge and weighs a lot (approx 3Lbs??) Well, my laptop weighs less than that LOL! This bag will eat into your cabin luggage allowance. Since its huge you’d have to stuff into the overhead baggage compartment, thus risking damage to your delicate camera equipment.
I bought this camera for a trip to China last summer because I needed a bag to carry my DSLR, lenses and a laptop. It was the perfect travel bag for me. I used this as a carry-on, and while it is quite large, it made it for me.
I am also a college student, and this is a great bag for carrying everything I need for the day. This backpack has a ton of dividers, and they all velcro so you can rearrange and make it your own.
This is a sturdy bag, and I really like the straps and backing. When you are putting a DSLR, lenses, laptop, charger, batteries, and everything else for a trip, it gets heavy fast, and this was a great bag at distributing the weight. The back has firm but soft padding that helps the bag maintain its shape and it has a slot on the backing that is molded to your spine and makes it much more comfortable.
Overall, I would recommend this for anyone who needs a bag for a trip or a sturdy bag to hold ALL of their gear.
